Small Business Technology

Image
It is no secret to anyone that the economy is affecting every portion of the business sector. But most of the so called experts are ignoring the backbone sector of our country....small business owners. It is these small business owners that collectively employ the most employees , contribute the most to the spending channel of our economy and provide the most services that other small business owners need. As a small business consultant, I continue to wonder in amazement the number of business owners who do not or refuse to leverage available technology to not only run their own business efficiently but also use technology to actually reduce costs. I recently was asked to consult with a local, yet popular optician who has been running a well respected and successful business for over 20 years. Why did he call me? He was looking for a way to bring in more customers and increase business as a way to offset rising costs for his products and services. Here is just a sample of what I f

Azure Windows

Image
Microsoft continues its strategic software transformation. It was during the first keynote of the PDC2008 (Professional Developers Conference, from Oct. 27 to Oct. 30 in Los Angeles) that Ray Ozzie, chief software architect for the company introduced Windows Azure. Windows Azure is a new offering designed specifically for "cloud computing". Cloud computing is internet based applications and dveelopment . Incorporating a layer of virtualization , it automatically handles the problem of load distribution by distributing and requesting resources between data centers based on volume. In short, the whole infrastructure of datacenters will support applications and emphasize security and high availability. This solutions architecture will be built around SQL Server, Active Directory and .Net technology. Windows Azure is not an OS. It constitutes the foundation for a platform for broadcasting services in a "cloud". It is built around Live Services .Net Services, SQL Servi

OSI Model

Image
OSI or known as Operating System Interconnection, it is an abstract reference model that developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in the early 1980s. It has seven layers to make the network communication happened. All the data from source devices must go through all these seven layers in order to communicate to the destination devices over a network. Now let us explored the seven layers: Application layer - This layer is simply a GUI or Graphic User Interface that let the user viewing files, transfer files or other tasks that related to network communication to run over a network. Presentation layer - It converts the data from the Application layer to a standard format to ensure that data from the source device can be interpreted by the destination device. The examples of various kind of standard format are video format (AVI) and graphic image formats (JPEG). Session layer - This layer is to create or establish the conversation between source and destin

Tokyo Electronics

Image
If you are a keen traveller and have ever found yourself in Tokyo, then you cannot have failed to notice that you were in the centre of electronic heaven. The Akihabara area is most definitely the area to head for if you are in Tokyo electronics shopping. This is a mecca for all things electronic including games consoles, cameras, hi fi equipment etc. Sometimes it is possible to get yourself a real bargain. A bargain, however, is only a bargain if it is what you wanted to buy and it serves the purpose that you bought it for. I say this because great care must be taken with Tokyo electronics. Very often you will purchase an item only to find that it is incompatible with either your current system or hardware. For example, in the Akihabara area of the city, it is possible to get some wonderfully cheap PlayStation games. These are genuine and authentic and not in anyway illegal or underhand. The only problem with them is that they are made for Japanese Playstations and will very ofte

During the first release of the first Apple computer in 1976, users were doubtful about its features. As more and more designs and features were added on every release, people are getting more and more interested with these computers . The rele

Technology

Image
Technology, that's what got us all into this mess isn't it? The internal combustion engine, jet propulsion, mechanized farming, power stations , pesticides, industrial pollution; the list goes on, and on. And now we're due to pay the price with both global warming and oil depletion looming as a result of squandering the earth's resources to feed our addiction to technology . Surely, since technology is so clearly to blame, we should strive to roll back the tide and oppose further so-called technological progress? Do I hear any takers for this proposition? A return to a golden age , lit by candles at night and warmed by the crackle of logs in countless hearths; a renaissance of home grown crops, chickens in the yard and beating your clothes on a rock down by the river just like you see in the movies? Oh I'm sure there are some diehard romantics who buy into the self sufficiency fantasy, but the really inconvenient truth is that if we all set about burning logs to

Youtube on Fast Learning Curve

Image
Youtube is one my favorite sites, I'm sure it may be one of your favorite sites as well. I came across a video earlier today which featured one of the co-founders of the largest internet video hosting site and he explained how they have dealt with copyrigh t issues, in particular, Viacom. Viacom and YouTube were engaged in a major copyright battle for months over the 'illegal' use of copyrighted material which was being uploaded on to the site. You and I both know just how easy it is to upload any old video on to YouTube within the click of a button so copyrighted material is bound to happen. After watching the video which I have enclosed in the resource box, you can understand what the train of thought of YouTube actually is. They see YouTube as a platform for advertising and instead of trying to battle with numerous companies over copyright they would rather join forces and reach the consumer easier. To advertise on YouTube would be so effective and would be so easy t

Right Technology

Image
Writing in InfoWorld magazine (6 Jan 2003), Ephraim Schwartz said: "The goal of IT, since its inception, has been the timely (a relative term) delivery of information to those who need it. Behind this goal is an unspoken belief in technology: If IT could deliver to its internal enterprise customers all of the information all of the time, it would be impossible for them to make a mistake." Understanding the difference between data and information More likely than not, many of the folks working in your organization's IT department don't actually know the difference between data and information. To be fair, they are not alone: Many people working as supervisors , managers, and executives probably don't recognize the difference between data and information either. Data are the bits of information your various systems store. The system may be any kind of system -- not necessarily and IT-related system. Those old metal filing cabinets still found around many offices

Computer Engineering

What is intelligence? What is cognition? Is thinking and thought uniquely human? Can Artificial Intelligent machines experience emotion and feelings, such as love and anger? ... Today's IT systems are mostly data and communication tools for human workers. Tomorrow's IT systems will be able to do more: automate decisions, intelligently analyze large amounts of data, and learn from their mistakes. ... It is predicted that computers will match the computational functions of the human brain early in the next century, and that soon afterwards humans and computers will merge to become a new species. Can humans compete? Mankind has always thought of what if. If I could only find a way to get from Point A to Point B faster, I would have more time for X,Y, &Z. from the first invention of the flint rock for hunting, to the discovery of fire, we have always looked for ways to do things just a little better than the day before. That same mind set led man to discover that the world

Registery Smart

Image
You won't know a good thing until you actually use it. Registery Smart is a product I would recommend anytime of the day or night. You see I am a businessman that works mainly on the computer and internet. O because of that I simply can't afford to have my computer down for very long. However that is kind of a catch 22 situation because of the fact that I do use it on the internet so much I end up getting a lot of unwanted garbage and errors that tends to slow down my computer. Until I found Registery Smart I had to usually give up my computer for at least a week to send it in and get it fixed. This was a huge inconvenience for me because I usually had to rent a laptop for that week and not to mention not have access to many of my files that were on my computer. One day a friend of mine who technically is a techie told me what most of these repair places do. I was actually outraged when he told me that I could do exactly what they do for less than 10 percent of what they

Slow PC

Every Microsoft Windows operating system has a registry. Your system registry holds a wealth of information about your computer, which is why we constantly hear that after using their PC for a short length of time, it no longer works the way it used to. This is due in part to invalid entries that exist in your system registry, that might exist because of software you are no longer using or software that was not properly removed. By removing these invalid entries, you can significantly increase the performance of your PC. Many locations exist that are the cause of the most common PC troubles. Registry fix will scan for errors related to Active X controls, DLL issues, Windows explorer errors, Windows installer issues, Internet Explorer errors, Iexpore and System32 errors, Runtime errors, Outlook and Outlook Express Errors, EXE errors, Svchost errors and a wide variety of other system issues. Computer Graphic Card

Image
A lot of people say that the CPU is the greatest thing ever made for your PC. After all, it is now known as the brains of your computer for nothing. But many people will say that your CPU is not complete without the graphic card . So what is the graphic card exactly? Basically, the graphic card influences the quality of content and images you will see on your computer. If you can hardly tell the difference between the 2GHz and the 3GHz processors on your computer, the difference between high-end graphic cards over its low-end alternative is significant. This is especially true for gaming-fans and graphic artists who need to have strong performance for their PC. The new version of Windows, the Vista, requires you to have powerful graphic tools in order to take advantage of its 3D interface. Right now, the graphic card market is one of the fastest growing areas in hardware because of the popularity of 3D games, animation , and video production. Computes weren't really designed t

Business Computing Mistakes

Image
There is practically no one who manages their business manually anymore and I'd venture to contend that those who do simply won't stay in business . Computers are vital to business today but often they are taken for granted and thought of as glorified typewriters. Computers store critical data that could devastate a business should it be lost. Below is a list of the things I see out there all the time that could spell disaster for any small or medium sized business. If any of it sounds familiar, it might be worth looking at your overall Information Technology strategy. Not watching the fort (or not having it watched) It happens - more often than you might think. Someone dutifully replaces the backup tape everyday only to find out (sometimes too late) that the backup never ran or that it failed. In the same vein, knowing about other problems that may be going on behind the scenes can help prevent data loss and downtime . It is vital to keep an eye on logs or automate the system

Hardware Audit

Image
As an IT Manager, you should always be prepared for an IT audit request. By being prepared for any kind of hardware auditing request, you are in a stronger negotiation position with manufacturers - when the threat of an IT audit is no longer menacing. Moreover, IT departments are frequently required to reconcile their physical inventory with an electronic inventory to meet various regulatory and financial requirements. This can be cumbersome, unless you have implemented an IT Asset Management tool that allows you to manage and audit your entire computer inventory easily. Beyond the complexities of hardware audits, software asset management introduces even greater challenges -- for example, auditing a hardware device for the software it contains, and the complexity of software recognition - mapping the many files found to licensed applications and units in the accounting system . To perform an IT audit you need to create a detailed computer inventory of all computer assets in your

Improving Computer Performance

Image
The mistake that a lot of people tend to make is letting the problem of a slow computer go unresolved, and their usual solution to this problem is to go out and buy a new machine . This is the vicious cycle of the average, less-knowledgeable computer user and they find that no matter how much money they spend they will end up having a slow machine, the same as before. Improving computer performance past and beyond the initial specs is actuality quite easy, all you have to do is manage a few tweaks that will restore your computer back to the way it was the first time you purchased it. These are just some of the tips and tricks you should know about, because they can help you bring back those joyous days of fast load and execution times. One of the best ways to do this is to get a good antivirus and anti adware program - which guards against vicious computer programs, viruses, Trojans and even adware and malware from being installed on your system. These programs and files have the po

How to Fix a Slow Computer

Web Browsing

Image
My friend and I were discussing how you would be able to securely browse the web from an offshore location the other day. Yes ok, I admit it's a pretty bizarre and geeky conversation but it emanated from something that we both dislike and that's censorship. You see Governments around the world are increasingly doing two things about the internet - Monitoring and insisting our web surfing, emails are logged Controlling and restricting the parts of the web that we can visit It's no joke and to someone who gets extremely annoyed when his posts are moderated in a forum you can imagine how worked up I get about this sort of stuff. The discussion about secure offshore web browsing was in particular related to my discovery that if you surfed the internet from Turkey - a liberal secular country that there were actually web sites that you couldn't visit because of religion. Anyway I probably should explain the technical basics behind these blocks - it's all to do with
